Brian Ranalow's recent solo exhibition at the Hallward Gallery, 65 Merrion Square, Dublin was opened by Richard Gorman RHA .
Ranalow is a regular visitor to Spain, with his Spanish wife Elsa, and much of his recent work reflects his time spent in the rugged mountainous area between Alicante and Valencia. His work demonstrates his ongoing experimentation with colour and texture and the vibrant reds and yellows convey both an atmosphere of drama and the heat of the Spanish Levant. He also uses material from his travels over the last two years - to the Caribbean and material from time spent sailing the Mediterranean around the islands of Menorca, Sardinia and Corsica. There are, in addition, a number of Irish landscapes, particularly of Waterford, Cork, Clare and Connemara and in these works Ranalow delivers his very individual interpretation, with an emphasis on colour and composition rather than topographical precision.
